With the end of the spectacular safari transfer to Habana.

Day 2 – Sigiriya

After breakfast, we head to the famous tooth of Sigiriya.

Sigiriya or Singari is an ancient rock-hewn fortress located in the north of Matla district near the town of Dambulla in central Sri Lanka. The site is historical and archaeological significance and has rock pillars about 200 meters high.

According to the ancient history of Sri Lanka, this place was chosen by King Casipe as its new capital. The king built the palace on the summit of the rock and adorned the walls with many murals. About halfway up the mountain, the king built the entrance gate to the palace in the shape of a giant lion. This is where the name of the place is derived from,  Singhiri-lion rock.

The place that was used, both as a capital city and as the king’s abode, was abandoned after the king’s death. Until the 14th century, this place served as a Buddhist temple. Today, Sigiriya is and is defined as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is one of the oldest and most planned places in the world.

After being impressed by the rock, we will visit a typical village in Sigiriya. Our tour of the village in Sigiriya will give us the opportunity to impress and experience the life of the locals in Sri Lanka authentically. We will spend time with the locals and learn about the lifestyle in the village. We will learn about the day-to-day jobs in the village which form the routine of the place. Ride a bull carriage, cruise in a catamaran boat and tour the crop fields. Together we will learn how to prepare local food. After all this we will finish the tour with a buffet style lunch served in Sri Lankan style. In this tour, we will actually experience the local life in a real way.

At the end of the tour we will return to Habana.

The name Dambula is derived from the word Damba = rock and Ole = fountain.

Further down the road we will stop by to visit the spice gardens at Matale and be impressed by the variety of famous Sri Lankan spices. From ancient times to the present day,Sri Lanka is known for its wide variety of spices growing in its soil.

It is even allowed and recommended to hike on the bridge itself and this is one of the things to do on a trip to Sri Lanka. This railway bridge is built entirely of rock along with nine stunning arches built by the British and is located between these stations and Damorda. One of the section of the railway passing between Kennedy and these is known as one of the most beautiful railways in the world.
